Empowerment of local communities in BiH by presenting positive examples of smart cities

23.06.2023.

Representatives of local communities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, participants of the project "Smart Cities - Towards Digital Transformation of Cities in BiH", representatives of the Association of Municipalities/Municipalities and Cities of the RS and FBiH, and the Bit Alliance Association were on a study visit to Rijeka and Krk on June 13 and 14. These cities in neighboring Croatia are champions in digital transformation and green transition, and BiH representatives had the opportunity to learn about their good practices and lessons learned.

Just like last year's study visit to Barcelona, this one also aimed to show positive examples of smart cities, the ways in which development agencies ensure self-sustainability, as well as to provide a deeper insight into the infrastructure projects they develop and the collaborations they achieve with the private sector. They were particularly impressed by the unique concept by which the city of Krk with its six municipalities manages its resources such as waste, water, energy resources, sharepoints for cars and bicycles, and energy-independent houses, and in Rijeka the reach of the local development agency, which not only successfully implements numerous projects, but also has its own hub within which it offers modern services such as professional 3D printing.

The project leaders and coordinators at local levels had the opportunity to become familiar with the concept of work, which basically has the unification of all factors to improve the quality of life, and they brought with them valuable knowledge that they will be able to implement in their own communities with the aim of improving readiness and capacity for the modernization of services using smart city solutions.

The local self-government units in Bosnia and Herzegovina that participate in this project are the cities of Prijedor, Zenica and Zvornik, and the municipalities of Pale and Tešanj.

The project "Smart cities - towards the digital transformation of cities in BiH", with the financial support of the develoPPP.de program of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the companies Lanaco and DVC Solutions, and implemented by Bit Alijansa, the association of IT companies in BiH.
