CoderDojo programming school

The CoderDojo project encourages children and young people to learn programming through free workshops throughout BiH.

The CoderDojo Project represents one of the longest-running and most recognizable initiatives of Bit Alliance, launched with the goal of providing children and young people across Bosnia and Herzegovina with free access to learning programming and developing digital skills. In cooperation with partner organizations, educational institutions, and IT companies, Bit Alliance organizes free programming schools and IT clubs under the CoderDojo initiative, bringing together primary and secondary school students and offering them the opportunity to take their first steps into the world of technology through a fun and practical environment.

CoderDojo is a global movement founded in Ireland, based on the voluntary work of mentors who share their knowledge with young people. Bit Alliance shares the core values of this movement – equal access to knowledge, early digital literacy, and encouraging logical and creative thinking through coding.

Project Goals

  • Provide free access to IT knowledge for children and youth across BiH, regardless of location or socioeconomic background.

  • Develop digital competencies and self-confidence among students through practical work and teamwork.

  • Connect local communities, schools, and IT professionals through a volunteer-based mentorship model.

  • Foster interest in STEM fields and contribute to the long-term development of IT talent in the country.

Activities

CoderDojo workshops are organized as free programming schools and clubs that operate in recurring cycles in multiple cities across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mentors – IT professionals, students, and volunteers – teach participants through practical, hands-on sessions covering topics such as:

  • Fundamentals of programming languages such as Python, Scratch, and JavaScript

  • Building websites, apps, and video games

  • Introduction to robotics, logical thinking, and digital safety

  • Teamwork, problem-solving, and creative project development

All activities take place in an informal, encouraging, and inclusive environment that promotes experimentation and exploration of new ideas.

Achieved Results

Since its inception, CoderDojo has become the most widespread program of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina:

  • Implemented in over 16 locations across 11 cities, including Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar, Zenica, Travnik, Tuzla, Maglaj, Gračanica, Sokolac, Konjic, and East Sarajevo.

  • More than 1,500 primary and secondary school students have participated, gaining basic programming knowledge and insights into the IT industry.

  • During the CoderDojo 2025 cycle, the program gathered over 250 young participants from five cities (Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar, Zenica, and Travnik), supported by local partners and volunteers.

  • Established a network of over 50 mentors who continuously support program implementation in different local communities.

These results confirm that Bit Alliance is successfully developing and expanding a community of young programmers and digital enthusiasts who will form the future strength of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s IT industry.

Long-term Impact

CoderDojo is more than a programming school – it is a movement that bridges the gap between education and the real needs of the labor market. In the long run, the program:

  • Strengthens digital literacy among children and youth

  • Lays the foundations for STEM career development

  • Encourages the active role of the IT community in education

  • Contributes to innovation and community development through cooperation between educational institutions, IT companies, and parents

CoderDojo stands as proof that through shared effort and enthusiasm, it is possible to build a culture of knowledge, collaboration, and solidarity – values that Bit Alliance continues to uphold as the foundation of the country’s digital future.
